Travelling and Local Information

Traveling:

1) Airport Transportation

A) The most convenient way of traveling between the airport and the conference venue would be to take a Taxi. Both Red/Green taxis can reach the conference venue, however, only Red taxis can access the Regal Riverside Hotel as limited by their operation area. Red Taxis are slightly more expensive, but rides to either CUHK/Regal Riverside Hotel should fall between HKD 300-350 (USD~ 40-50; EUR~35-45)  depending on the traffic and route taken.

Official guidelines from HK Airport: https://www.hongkongairport.com/en/transport/to-from-airport/taxis.page

B) Uber is also a possible choice and serves as a convenient alternative to Taxis. The charges are generally the same as taxis but might have extra surcharges depending on demands and traffic conditions. Please follow Uber's official guidelines and etc.

C) Airport bus is another option.

Bus number A41 will travel to the ``Shatin'' destrict. The whole journey should take ~1 hour and cost HKD23.4 (~3 USD/EUR).

To head to CUHK/Hyatt Regency, you have to do a transit via MTR after taking the airport buses. You can get off the bus at ``ShaTin Downtown bus terminal'', and take the MTR (light blue line) at Shatin Station (~5 minutes, ~5 HKD, <1 USD/EUR). The train towards ``Lo Wu'', ``Lok Ma Chau'' or occasionally ``Sheung Shui'' and ``TaiPo Market'' (usually at night only) can bring you to ``University'' station, where CUHK and Hyatt Regency are located.

For Regal Riverside Hotel, A41 directly drops you there at station ``Regal Riverside''.

The frequency of airport buses, however, is rather sparse (~30 - 40 mins, depending on the time of the day)

D) The last option would be the airport express. However, this route is extremely indirect and thus is not recommended. In case you must use the airport express, the way to get to the venue would be:

Airport --(Airport Express)--> Hong Kong Station --(Island line, dark blue)--> Admiralty Station --(Eastern railway line, light blue)--> University Station (or Shatin Station for Regal Riverview, refer to the guideline above)

A single trip from the airport to the Hong Kong station would cost HKD~100 (~13 USD/12 EUR). And from Hong Kong station to University/Shatin Station, HKD~20 (~3 USD/EUR)

E) We do not recommend renting a car and driving in Hong Kong. Parking is extremely expensive with devastatingly costly fuel. If you do have to drive, both hotels provide parking slots at the rate of HKD 240 per 24 hours with registration required.

2) City Transportation

Hong Kong is known for its extremely convenient public transportation system. The majority of the city is covered by MTR (metro) service at a very reasonable price. The details can be found at https://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/services/system_map.html.

CUHK is located at the ``University'' Station on the Eastern Railway (light blue), and the Regal Riverview Hotel is located 10 minutes walk away from ``Sha Tin'' Station on the same route.

The bus system is also very convenient, especially to places that are slightly isolated from MTR stations. There are two major bus operator in Hong Kong, KMB and Citybus. They both provide mobile applications for one to check for schedule and routes.

We strongly recommend you use the mobile application ``City Mapper'' in case of planning any visits to anywhere in Hong Kong.

Local Information:

The emergency number in Hong Kong is 999.

Almost all of the transportation means in Hong Kong are supported by our ``Octopus'' traffic card system. You can also pay for groceries at convenience stores/supermarkets, and sometimes, meals at some restaurants with octopus. You can buy one at almost all of the MTR stations, and recharge it any time. If you prefer, you could also bind the octopus card to your phone. We strongly recommend those who would like to explore Hong Kong a bit to get one octopus.
